On November 24th 2022 at 2018hrs a call for service was received, initially, as a verbal disturbance. By 2020hrs it had turned into a shooting and a victim was on the ground. As I approached the call and the details of the shooting were transmitted I noticed that my heartrate and breathing were elevated and my vehicle had entered pursuit mode. At one point during my nearly 5-minute response I had to remember to manually control my breathing and tell myself ‘’I’m no good to anyone if I don’t get there.’’ It was also around this point I realized I was going to be the first responder on scene, and back-up was NOT around the corner. I would arrive on scene at 8:24:22pm and the first backup Deputy would arrive at 08:31:27pm with the first Medic on scene at 08:31:43pm. I was alone for 7 minutes and 5 seconds.
As I approached the scene I remembered dispatch relayed the shooter had fled however, my first priority was scene safety before I could get to the victim. Once that was established I identified that the victim had 3 gunshot wounds. One to the arm, and two in the lower torso. I immediately went for the arm and attempted to apply a tourniquet but failed to deploy it successfully. I realized I had lost fine motor skills enough that I couldn’t fix the tourniquet so I went to the car for my kit and spare tourniquet. I was able to deploy this tourniquet on the victims injured arm and notified dispatch of the application. Next was the victim’s airway and breathing. Thankfully the victim was still conscious however, he was complaining of difficulty breathing and that he was hot and I could see he was sweating profusely. I cut off both of his sweatshirts and his t-shirt and then continued my assessment. I lifted his knees and began raking his legs for more massive bleeding indicators or injuries. I moved to his chest and arms and then assisted him taking off the shirts I had cut. In the meantime, I had a civilian who helped apply pressure to the wounds on his torso. I had a towel placed under his head and under his body to keep him off the ground and placed my AED nearby in the event it was needed. I then checked the pulse of the arm where I had applied the tourniquet to ensure it was tight enough. As medics and other Deputies arrived I began applying bandages provided in the Silverback kit as another Deputy utilized the trauma shears to remove the victim’s pants and prepare him for transport. Together, we lifted the victim onto a gurney and loaded him into an ambulance for transport to a nearby helicopter that flew him to a Columbus Hospital. From gunshots to takeoff was 40 minutes. My understanding is the victim was taken into surgery where three rounds were removed from his body and he is expected to survive the incident.
Looking back on this incident and my response I recognize several mistakes that I made however, I was immediately thankful for the opportunity to attend ‘’Surviving the Shot.’’ Nearly every piece of my response was attributed to this training. That class and the instructors gave me the skills and knowledge to formulate that response to this incident and prepared me for a real-world critical event. The repetitions and stress-induced practical applications were exactly what I relied on. It wasn’t until afterwards that I realized the most powerful skill I learned was the M.A.R.C.H.E procedure and the options it provides. I didn’t panic, I knew what to do, and I have the OTOA Silverback Safety and Training team to thank.
Thank you for this invaluable knowledge,
Deputy S.R. - LCSO
Troy and his staff deliver an amazing product. As a fire chief,I was looking for a stress induced, real-life, hands-on training. Silverback delivered and much more. Exceeded every expectation and more. Troy and his staff have something really special and my crews around the station will talk about for years. The demand for their return is a must have and we look forward to hosting Silverback again.

Like most other people, everyone hopes to never need to train with this style of learning and hopes it would never happen. The reality is that it happens. I'd be the first to tell you that I rolled my eyes at taking this class and thought I would hate it. I was blissfully unaware how much I would get out of this class and how much I leaned and feel is valued information. This class is absolutely what you make it. No matter how big of a group, you are much better off to try to learn and have fun and work together for the benefit of you personally and professionally. I got more out of it than anticipated and will continue to see more.

I wanted to tell you the story of using the NuStat Tactical from your Protector II kit.
I was in Kentucky cruising down a back road when I came upon an automobile accident. There was a gentleman with a shoulder injury that had an extremely bad slice to the upper rounded part of his shoulder. The laceration was bleeding very badly. I always have my plate carrier and associated equipment with me for call outs so I went straight to your kit and grabbed about everything out of it. I applied some 4x4's however it didn't even begin to stop the bleeding. I opened the NuStat and layered it back and forth over the wound pressing in as much as I could. I then covered with the last of the 4x4's and held pressure until medics arrived.
Whether or not this was the proper use or not for this type of injury, it worked and the bleeding stopped. I was very thankful that I had the kit with me that day.
As for the Pro Hunter kit, I like the layout and the fold out case, very easy to see and grab what you need fast.
Thanks again for the great products. If there is anything I can do for you, please let me know.
Bret
After the training, I went through my gear and am reworking my IFAKS so that I have one attached to my go bag for victims as well as a separate one on my vest to be used on myself/partner. After working with your Protector II IFAK, I haven't been able to find an IFAK that I like more. Thanks for your time and looking forward to the opportunity to train with you guys again.

This course was a great combination of hands on instruction and realistic scenarios. Instructors brought a wide range of skills and experience to the table and were passionate about ensuring we took something away from the class and felt comfortable with the skills that were taught. Added stress during the scenarios allowed you to take what you learned and apply it while working through the stress. Great group of fellow officers and medics to work and train with.

Recently completed the TECC/RTF course from Silverback. Mr. Lowe and his team do an excellent job of balancing instruction with hands on skill stations. The extremely knowledge instructors draw from their diverse backgrounds to provide unique perspectives and lifelike training. The instructors meet each student at their current skill level and build the skills and confidence of the student to a high level of proficiency. The scenario training is superb. In addition to creating realistic training scenarios, the professional actors add a level of realism that I have not experienced before in any training. Each member of the Silverback Team is passionate about teaching these critical life saving skills. The class was very well organized and each instructor possesses a keen eye for detail. I would highly recommend utilizing Silverback for your training needs regardless of your current skill set.

What comes to mind when you hear the words, professional, experience, accuracy, and top training? To me, I immediately think of Silverback Safety and Training Solutions, Inc. Why? I was honored to be a speaker at a recent Silverback training event and experienced their training firsthand. My specialty is threat awareness. As a former U.S. Secret Service Psychologist and CIA Intelligence Officer with scores of government contracts under my belt, I have both trained and have been trained for decades. Given my specialty, I have been exposed to manuals, books, lectures, and hands-on training. I assure you; I know what works and what doesn’t work. I place Silverback at the top of my list as the go-to group for hands-on training in how to manage high stress and save lives in life threatening events, attacks, and calamities.
Why does Silverback shine? When I provided my talk at Silverback training, I stayed and participated in three days of advanced training. The first thing I noticed was this was very different. It was not a boring whiteboard presentation. It was not being given a manual to read with follow-up quiz. It was not an academic exercise of any type. It WAS a down to Earth, hands-on training involving everyone and led by true professionals not only trained but actually experienced in crisis-based life threatening events and prevention.
Just as one example, I have written and spoken about the 2016 Pulse nightclub mass shooting that killed 49 and wounded 53. I was very familiar with the details. But I could not feel the event. What was it like to be trapped with an attacker shooting victims multiple times as he made his way through the locked-door building? What were the sounds, what were the smells? How did first responders work to save lives? During the Silverback training, they had a life-like recreation of that event. Taking only a few trainees in at a time to ensure complete training, I walked in the door and was met with loud music, smoke, actor victims on the floor ''bleeding out,'' and it was up to trainees to immediately put their training into practical use. They had to apply the techniques they had just learned. It was exceptional training, to say the least, and as a threat expert covering the details of that event, I now had an idea what it was really like.
During their training, I heard accounts of the Ft. Hood massacre from true hero survivors. Yes, they were actually there. I was riveted to every word and learned/felt what victims experienced and the PTSD that can result with long lasting effects. I learned first aid techniques such as packing a wound to save lives during tragic events. I also learned more about prevention.
This is only a small sample of the reality of Silverback training. I want to go back and experience more. The trainers are real and have been there. I came away from the training realizing even more the difference between a first aid manual and truly experiencing how to save lives in the midst of a crisis situation. Bottom line, Silverback Safety and Training Solutions, Inc. must be experienced. They have focused on schools, law enforcement, military, commercial companies, and many more. People are people regardless of the setting, and in a life threatening situation the training is the constant that is a difference that makes a difference. I highly recommend Silverback for your hands-on professional, experienced, accurate, and topnotch instruction.

Everyone, especially those who work in schools or colleges, should have Silverback Safety’s trauma kits and at least the basic training to use them. It is much better to have them and not need them then to need them and not have them. After all, they could help you to save a life, including your own. Troy Lowe is excellent to work with, knowledgeable, responsive, and all around helpful.

Silverback came out to our high school and did a self-defense training for high school girls. The trainers were incredibly knowledgeable, weaving real-life scenarios from their own experience into the defensive movements and strategies. They brought a team that was very professional, so that our students got to really work on things with one-on-one feedback from the instructors. Those who participated keep practicing what they learned and have really spread the word around our school about everything they know now. One senior girls said, “I know I won't freeze in a scary situation now. Just working through it over and over really helped me before I go to college.”

Just wanted to say that I had an amazing time at your event a few weeks ago. The event you put on for our residency was great! It was an amazing learning experience to see what goes on in the prep-hospital setting before we get patients into our emergency department. The hands on learning was also way better than the traditional sit in a classroom with powerpoints. My most favorite portion of the class was when you brought in real pig lungs and tracheas and allowed us to do almost real cricothyrotomies as well as being able to decompress the lungs and seeing it real time. Thanks for doing this and just like 2 years ago it was an amazing experience that I will forever cherish during my time in residency.

I'm one of the Adena residents that attended your course with Dr Allen recently.
Just wanted to thank you for the amazing training course! Your staff were extremely competent and were very effective teachers. Their extensive real-world experience using the things they were teaching us was obvious by their mastery of the subjects and ability to convey those concepts in an understandable way.
The only suggestion for change I had was in regards to the teaching of the MARCHE algorithm. I thought the initial teaching and hands-on practice was excellent, and the active shooter scenario was an awesome simulation, but it did feel like one more intermediate step in between may have been helpful to really cement that concept before adding the stress of the active shooter scenario. My thought would be something like a simulated scenario without the added pressure/stress/distractions of the active shooter scenario.
Overall, this was an amazing event, I felt privileged to be taught by so many incredible instructors with super solid foundations of real-world experience. The information delivered was taught extremely clearly, and there was great emphasis on context, specifically instructors did great at explaining why our practice and priorities change in response to the context we find ourselves in.
Please pass on to your guys (and gals) that I was honored to have been among people who have dedicated so much of their lives to protecting our way of life while risking their own health and safety. Thank you so much to all the Military, Police, Medics, and other first responders for your work keeping the rest of us safe!!
Thanks again, hope we get to work with you again!

I hope this email finds you well.
I wanted share with you something that happened this weekend.
Saturday morning, I left the house to run some errands. I came upon an auto accident involving 3 cars. One of the 3 cars was flipped on its side.
Two of the three were trapped and one of the two trapped, was unconscious.
I went to the first vehicle and helped her to the side of the road where she sat with my wife.
I then went to second vehicle, driven by a younger woman. She was trapped in her car because her doors were jammed shut.
I was able to pry her driver’s door open, so she could get out. As I helped her out, she could barely walk, because of the state of shock she was in. I helped her to an embankment and sat her down.
By this time, another passer by stopped to help. She sat with the lady in shock and consoled her, while I went to help the third victim.
The third vehicle was the one that was flipped with the unconscious victim, who was an elderly man. His vehicle was laying on its passenger side.
When I was helping the second victim, I could see his body hanging from his driver’s seat seatbelt and that he was bleeding from his head.
I helped the extract him from the vehicle and carry him (using a carry from our class), to a safe area.
By this time medics and other emergency personnel had pulled up and taken over the scene.
I thought about everything that just happened. And I immediately reflected to your active shooter training.
Obviously, this was not an active shooter. But the training applied. The situation possessed the physical and mental trauma, high stress, the need for quick thinking and quick reaction
this event has really hit me hard and made me think that an accident in the workplace can possess the same traits as an auto accident or God forbid, an active shooter.
I can’t stress enough how important and beneficial this training would be in our other facilities.
When I went through your training, obviously I knew the importance of it. But when I was put in the situation to apply the training, it really opened my eyes.
As important as the training was to me, it is more important to those who are hurt.
Please do not view this email as self-serving. Or an opportunity to pound my chest. I was scared. (Still am, to tell the truth)
It was a violent and traumatizing scene. And to be honest, I don’t believe I would have responded the way I did, without your training.
It’s not my nature to write something like this. But I want you to know you and your team are appreciated.
Saturday… 3 people, who have never heard of Troy Lowe or Silverback Safety and never took your training, benefitted from you and your teams good work.
I wanted you to know that.

Thanks again for hosting the Adena Emergency Medicine Residency. Once again you taught us life-saving measures that can be applicable in the ED but also in real-life. Unfortunately with the increase in mass casualty incidents and gun violence some of the activities taught to us should really be life skills. Having gone through the program a total of 2 times, I am embarrassed to say my skills got rusty having not practiced much of it during the time span in between. Just goes to show how important it is to continue practicing these simple skills whether it is placing a tourniquet for arterial bleed, learning how to defend yourself from potential physical threats or just appreciating the potential dangers of being first responders. I hope you continue to show your skills and passion with others as you have for us here at Adena. Thank you!

Just wanted to pass on thanks for holding such an awesome event for what trauma care looks like out in the field. I really enjoyed the multiple stations learning unique critical care skills and learning from your highly experienced staff. Thought everyone had a great attitude and dedication to teaching. I also appreciated the experience of trying to take care of patients while under extremely high stress situations, it seemed very realistic. My only suggestion in the future would be to potentially see how you guys handle the situation with your extensive training! You could do it at the end and show us how it's really done. Thanks again and it was an amazing experience I won't forget!

I am contacting you in regards to TECC training with Silverback STS.
I lead a group of about 18 Emergency Medical Responders (bottom rung of the EMS ladder) here at Honda Transmission Mfg., a company of about 1500 Associates.
This is the most comprehensive and intense training I have ever taken.
In my training history, we sit in a class room and listen to instruction and then sitting there, we practice what we we’ve been lectured on, until class is over. This training applies it all, in an aggressive manner. Lecture comes first and then, aggressive, hands on application of the lectured items, returning to class room for discussion of what was learned.
The labs are also extremely hands on. Troy and his team are extremely supportive in this training. My teams and I were unfamiliar with many of these countermeasures, because they are out of the norm for us. Silverback supported and showed the proper methods and then with guidance and repetition with the hands on methods. The exposure makes us better responders and helps us to better understand the proper methods. This training can make an average lay person a life saver.
Then the stress inoculation scenarios, allow a responder to take all the new skills and put them together in life saving simulations. Many responders feel over whelmed at first, because they’ve never been in such a stressful situation before. Through repetition and constant encouragement, a responder gets to where it all starts to come together for them. They are able to remember training, be calm, and apply the medicine to save lives.
At first my teams didn’t know what to expect and approached it as ''another training class''. After taking the training, for an entire weekend, these teams are invigorated and ready for just about any scenario that could come our way. They have confidence in their newly acquired life-saving skills. These skills are also under constant consideration for the industrial environment. I can see the new knowledge applied in every day industrial settings.
Training with Silverback will make your rescue team more confident and more capable for any emergency response scene.

I recommend the Bitt Kit as the ''go to'' trauma bag for both the experienced medic and anyone who may face a medical emergency for the firsttime. The ingenious design, organizing each pocket by body part, makes it quick and easy to find the needed supplies. Bitt Kitt is the perfect tool to sustain life until help arrives.
And you can quote me on that.

Great Experience! I just wanted to thank you and comment on how great the training was. Training occurred at an annual symposium for our Emergency Medicine Residency, and was geared towards new physicians in the field of Emergency Medicine and the tactical/EMS side of pre-hospital care. Not only was the lecture material extremely interesting, it was a great lesson in the types of actions tactical providers/first responders will be providing prior to hospital arrival. The course was well conducted and the instructor provided up to date information regarding patient care. We had also spent time running drills outside which was a blast. I would recommend this course material to anyone interested and it definitely applied to those who are involved in the field.

This is a realistic at it gets. Silverback’s active shooter training is not only laced with realism, it is the real deal and just about the most effective means of exposing the American populace to lifesaving maneuvers in the face of mass shootings, which are increasing in frequency by geometric progression every year. As a survivor of the Fort Hood Massacre in 2009, the largest scale mass shooting on any military installation in U.S. history, it is unmistakable that Silverback’s training modules comprise the very best training practices available anywhere to date. Had this training and BITT KITS been available to us through the Department of the Army in the face of grave danger and a complete absence of medical supplies, it is highly likely that there would have been many more survivors of this mass shooting. The Silverback instructors have dedicated their lives to the safety and security of the masses and to offering solutions for making at home alive in the face of mortal danger.

As a survivor of the 2009 Fort Hood shooting, I understand how important it is for people to have this training. Silverback implements training that is as close to realistic as you can get. There is no doubt that people that complete their training will be better prepared and increase their chances of survival and of saving lives. Staff are kind, supportive, and utilize a hands on approach in realistic conditions. During the attack at Fort Hood, there were no medical supplies available and we had to use shirts, hats, belts, and anything we could get our hands on. Products like the BITT KIT would have allowed us to better treat wounds on the scene. The instructors have a passion for what they teach and are truly experts in their field.

I felt the training was very very helpful. I also believe that it should be mandatory for EVERYONE employed here to attend this training. We are ALL living in dangerous times and no matter where we are.. at work.. at the mall.. in church… etc. We need to have the information to do the best we can to get out alive and go home. Everyone in this agency should be trained as to what to do and how to alert others. If only a portion of us have any idea about what we need to do if this ever happened here, I feel we have a missing link that could impede everyone’s safety.

I had the pleasure of meeting Troy at a Medical class in Youngstown, Ohio. Troy’s Background, knowledge & Gear of what it takes to make it through violent/traumatic events. He has simplified trauma kits that a person with no medical background can access and treat others effectively. I will be purchasing these kits for my work and home. I will also be signing up for courses in the future with Troy.

I have been blessed to be able to train with Troy Lowe and his team twice in active shooting events. Troy brings a complete knowledge of what it takes to make it through these events. Troy brings his military training along with his law enforcement and fire safety together to share a very unique look into one of these events. I feel with Troy’s training I am much better prepared if I was ever in an active shooter situation to make it out to the other side. I will be signing up for more courses in the future with Troy and his team.
